What’s Happening in the Legislature Today?
To see what bills are coming through each chamber on any given day, you can view the reading calendars below.
-
In order for a bill to pass, it must be read three times before the chamber.
The first reading is when a bill is introduced and then the Speaker decides what committee will hear the bill.
Once a committee approves the legislation, it is brought back to the full House for second reading. If a committee decides to amend the bill, it goes to General Orders for consideration by the whole chamber.
The third and final reading of the bill is when it is voted on by the full chamber. The bill is supposed to be read in full, but the full reading can be dispensed with by unanimous vote to read just the title instead.
So when you look at the reading calendar, bills listed on Third Reading will be voted on today, unless the chamber decides to delay the vote.
